Description: Koto Tanto Zaimei Kuninaga with NBTHK Hozon Kanteisho This elegantly shaped tanto, signed in nijimei “Kuninaga,” bears the qualities characteristic of the Yamato den Uda school, suggesting the attribution to Uda Kuninaga. Dating to the late Muromachi period, as mentioned in the certificate, this piece is a testament to the school’s legacy in skillful forging. Given that the Uda school settled in Etchu(today’s Toyama) there are also many Soshu influences in their work. This can be seen in this piece as well, with a more active or interesting hamon. This piece retains its Yamato roots however with its prominent masame-hada. Though it is still fairly healthy, it is worth noting that it is clear that this sword, while bearing qualities valued by collectors, was once well loved, and potentially used more than a few times. About Uda Kuninaga Uda Kuninaga was an esteemed swordsmith of the late Muromachi period, affiliated with the Uda school in Etchu Province.
