Description: This antique watercolor box dates from the middle to the end of the 19th century when painting illuminating pictures was popular among the gentry of England. James Newman was a well known colourman in London and at this time had his shop in the Soho section of the town. This box has 17 of the 18 original color pigments plus many other extras including gilding mixing glass palettes., a gilding brush, two ceramic palettes, Newman and Charles Roberson, and a small measuring beaker. The really striking feature of this box is its beautiful blue and gold trade card in the lid. The two water bowels are replacements. The box measures 12 1/2” x 9” x 3 3/4”.
