The Roman army defeats a Dacian army and a wingless victory (like the one in the vexillum you want) but's a victors laurel wreath over Trajan's head as he offers Minerva an orb which might also signify conquest over the world. Yes, the Romans and Greeks both new the world was round and Roman emperors are often seen holding an orb in their hands showing dominion over the world. It had been mathematically proven hundreds of years earlier. Two roman standard vexillum's can be seen in the back ground. .Frames also available. These prints normally retail for $1500 each and it is vertically impossible to find the same exact print again. Especially of these wonderful Roman Triumphal Arch Relief Panels which took me years to collect many long years ago. This particular print of Trajan's column is one of my favorites as well. It celebrates Trajan's triumph and Victory over the dreaded Dacians that the emperors before him paid off with yearly endowments to buy them off and keep them from invading the empire. Vespasian and Trajan are my two favorite Emperors that were even worth a hoot in my book. You see several interesting things in this one print. The emperor himself is being given a victors laurel wreath by winged Victory herself while in return he hands the world over to Roma in the symbol of a round orb. Yes the Romans already knew the world was round. The Female personification of Roma's helmeted head is seen on almost all the Roman rebublic coinage. She was their Uncle Sam in many ways except that she could be worshipped. This print also shows that Trajan took his elite foot praetorian guard with him which was extremely rare for the praetorians as they never left Italy for campaigns during the time of the empire. Besides the elite praetorians, the emperors elite cavalry horse guard known as "Equites singulares Augusti" or the Imperial Horse Guards went with Trajan. Both are shown on the left wearing plumed attic style helmets. Three different types of Roman armor can also be seen. The Praetorian wear the lorica segmentata, the horse guard wear the lorica squamata and the emperor wears the lorica musculata. It is interesting you see Trajan's being crowned right after his elite guards run down the Dacians in a finale blow. Holding the best for last was a strategy started by the Romans. Every legion had an elite first cohort which was doubled. They were only brought into battle if both the auxiliary forces and the other nine cohorts could not finish the battle. Napoleons Imperial Guard were only used at Waterloo.
