Description: Antique Hand-Painted Victorian Style FanIn Near Mint to Mint ConditionEncased in Gilded Hand-Carved Shadow BoxSigned by the Artist This fan was owned by a senior executive of Maas Brothers, a chain of upscale department stores in Florida that was consolidated into Burdines in 1991, which, in turn, merged with Macy's in 2005. When he retired at the age of 55, around 1978, Maas Brothers owned and operated 36 stores. As an avid collector, in his retirement he traveled the world, and amassed an extraordinary collection of fine arts. It is not known how many individuals previously owned this fan, but it is remarkable that it has been maintained in such exceptional condition. It deserves to be placed where it is readily visible. Please search eBay for "antique hand painted fans". In my search of April 26, 2020, I found 23 antique hand-painted fans listed between $2,125 to $7,500. Only 6 of the 23 are encased:3 of which are in simple rectangular shadow boxes;1 of which is in a very good quality uncarved custom fit wood shadow box;2 of which are in beautiful gilded, hand-carved wood custom fit shadow boxes that appear to be similar in quality to the shadow box for this fan. The shadow box is gilded, custom fit, beautifully hand-carved wood, with a wood back and glass front. It is in pristine condition. The shadow box cannot be opened without causing damage, and appears to have never been opened. Thus, it is probable that this fan has not been touched by human hands since it was mounted in its shadow box. The material for the frame for this fan cannot be positively identified without opening the case (which would be a very bad idea). Two possibilities include mother of pearl and bone, neither of which I am able to rule in or out. Please carefully examine the two closeup photos of the frame for the fan, using the enlarge feature. It is intricately carved, and is inlaid with alternating carved pink and gold colored flowers, less that halfway up. It is inlaid with carved gold designs further up, and more carved gold designs further up yet. The main spine is also carved, and is inlaid with gold designs. The frame for the fan also appears to be in pristine condition. If desired, these closeups can be compared to fans listed on eBay where the materials for the fans' frames are identified in the descriptions. The artwork is hand-painted on silk, and is signed by the artist, "Garcia". The signature is very light. A closeup of the artist's signature is provided in the photos. The fan is likely continental Europe, but the specific country of origin is not known. According to Wikipedia, the surname "Garcia" is common in Spain, Portugal and parts of France. The outside border of the fan is intricate lace. Please check the two closeup photos of the lace, using the enlarge feature. I have not been able to find a fan listed on eBay with a comparable lace border. This is a large piece:Case outside dimensions: approximately 22" W x 16" H x 3" DFan dimensions: approximately 16 1/2" W x 9 1/4" H A minor note: the fan has a tassel. If you research similar fans on eBay, you will notice that this is a rare feature. The age of the fan has not been determined. Similar fans listed on eBay are claimed to date in the 1800s, and as far back as 1780. Shipped UPS ground or USPS Priority Mail. This piece will be carefully packed, marked fragile and insured to at least the full purchase price.
