Description: Antique 19th-Century Anglo-Indian British Colonial Porcupine Quill Box. Extra Large in size. Circa 1880s A Stunning Antique 19th-Century British Colonial porcupine quill box. The ebony box was made in Ceylon, The Colonial name for Sri Lanka. The Antique Anglo-Indian ebony box is handcrafted with porcupine quills and enhanced with bone dots. The rectangular hinged lid box has wooden strapping, bands of striated quills between bone inlaid ebony stiles, and inlaid bone accents. These boxes are hand-made and are each slightly different in size and/or appearance due to the use of actual natural porcupine quills (quills are naturally shed and are used without harm to the animals). These boxes are rare and have become hard to find in the U.S. with the present prohibited agriculture and animal products being imported. This stunning box is Extra Large. Measures 11.5" Wide x 8 " Deep and 4 3/4" Tall In Excellent Condition. Shows some wear appropriate to age. See Photos-only a few quills missing. Full disclosure the hinges in the back are broken, but still closes as you can see in photos.
