Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA Rare press cutting from a French weekly (probably Le Monde Illustré) (1864), that depicts Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Army as his force, after taking Atlanta, pursued the retreating hapless Confederate Gen. Hood into Alabama with the latter continuing on into Tennessee to be clobbered there by his former professor at West Point, Virginia native Union Gen. George Thomas, while Gen. Sherman remained and stocked up in Alabama for his successful March to the Sea through Georgia (Nov-Dec 1864), disrupting the Confederacy’s economy in its heartland. This scene depicts a Zouave unit in Gen. Sherman’s force, probably the 17th New York Veteran Infantry Regiment. Ironically, Gen. Sherman’s personal guard consisted of the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment, composed of men from Alabama who had remained loyal to the Union. European journalists and illustrators had exceptional access on the ground during the Civil War (with both sides eager to get their story out to European audiences). This is an original press cutting, not a modern artsy-craftsy reprint. Perfect for framing, exhibition, or as a gift. 14.4in x 10in. Mailed in a tube.
