Description: Great old Indian silver plated belt buckle. Probably late 19th or early 20th century Swami work from Sri Lanka. This lovely four panel cast silver plated belt buckle could have been worn by a colonial period nurse of a high rank. No hallmarks. Stamped 65 to the rear, possibly the belt/strap width/size code. The deity depicted on the two larger panels may be Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of medicine who also is an avatar of Lord Vishnu and is mentioned in the Puranas as the god of Ayurveda. Hindu worshippers will pray to Dhanvantari asking for his blessings and good health for themselves and others. I imagine the ladies adorning the smaller side panels may have collected herbs as remedies. Wear it and feel protected. The four panel versions are quite rare. Very good pre-loved and worn vintage condition with no faults found. Sizes approximately: Width maximum: 16cm (6.1/4”) Height: 7cm (2.3/4”) I have given it a quick wipe over, but as with all my items I don't over clean or polish. There may be the odd age related wear/mark commensurate with age, anything of note is listed above. Please see all photos using the zoom function available, as they constitute the item description. Please note where possible packaging is recycled. If purchasing via expedited shipping despatch time will be one working day maximum. I only ship internationally via eBay’s GSP service, as the U.K. does not provide a fully tracked service. Check out my other listings for more antique, vintage and collectable silver.
