Jean Alexandre Joseph Falguiere 1831-1900 created magnificent bronze sculptures in the 19th century and is considered one of the finest French sculptors of his day. This one depicts Diana looking up with her bow in hand. This is a magnificent 19th century sculpture depicting an exquisite and very rare version of nude Diana the Huntress with her crescent moon and bow. It is inscribed A. Falguiere and also has the Thiebaut Foundry Paris Seal. This is a big beautiful example of a nude Dianna one of his rarest models. She measures 34 inches high, 11-1/4 inches wide at the base. Weight 34 lbs. She is in excellent condition. Guaranteed to please the most particular sculpture collector or connoisseur. Alexandre Joseph Falguière(French, 1831-1900) A scholarship awarded by the city of Toulouse allowed Falguière to study with the sculptor François Jouffroy (1806-1882) at the École des Beaux-Arts. He made his debut at the Salon in 1857; two years later, he was the joint winner with Léon Cugnot (1835-1894) of the Prix de Rome. At the Académie Française in Rome, Falguière came under the influence of fellow student Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875), who would become a leading sculptor of the Second Empire (1852-1870). Falguière remained in Rome until 1865 but exhibited at the Salon in Paris without interruption from 1863 to 1899.Despite the academy’s objections over the excessive realism in his works, many of his sculptures were acquired by the French government. After his return to Paris, Falguière made a series of sculptures of female figures, identified by mythological names but conceived as real, modern women. In 1882 Falguière was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts and elected to membership at the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
