DESCRIPTION:Offered for your review and consideration is this wonderful early 20th century American folk art oil on board copy of the famous painting 'Poker Sympathy,' which was originally painted by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (American, 1844-1934) in 1903. The original painting, of which this is a period folk art copy, was one of 18 original oil paintings commissioned to Cassius Marcellus Coolidge by the cigar company Brown & Bigelow. These specific works by Coolidge (the dog paintings) became widely known, very popular and universally adored, as a result of them being featured in the Brown & Bigelow cigar advertising campaign. This particular folk art oil on board, was most likely inspired by the original work featured in a published print for Brown & Bigelow cigars. The artist who made the copy oil on board, took some personal liberties from the original oil on canvas. One dog is missing directly under a hanging red metal light, which is not present in the original painting. The missing dog is replaced with the upper backrest of a wooden chair, upon which another dog is sitting. A framed painting on a wall in the background is added but a valance or shelf and framed ancestral, family portraits (of dogs) leaning against the wall and circumnavigating the room, have been removed in the copied reproduction. The work is quite capably done, with tremendous attention to the details of the original painting and is realized with some significant skill. The artist appears however to be self-taught. This is not some inexpensive, cheaply framed, modern lithographed poster of the famous original, period early 20th century image, but rather an antique, period, folk art copy of the original painting, of which this artist at least, took some personal liberties in changing. The work is unsigned and is affixed to a wooden stretcher and in a gold enamel painted wide format, period wooden frame. What's on the walls next to your pool table or in your cigar or gaming room? Absolutely terrific. Dogs, beer, poker ...what's there not to like? CONDITION:Good to Very Good overall antique condition.(*Not an original work by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge but nevertheless, an original period copy or painted reproduction of the well-known, original oil painting 'Poker Sympathy,' done in 1903.)
