Description: This is one of those stories you read about: An estate or locker is discovered with hundreds of antique oil paintings by an undiscovered artist who possessed talent, skill and ability and who was able to achieve a style ahead of their time and who died nearly 100 years ago. You may remember nearly a year ago when we purchased a collection of 70 paintings and pastels which came from the estate of E.E. (Elton Ernest) Thresher (1881-1937) of Massachusetts. This week we are happy to announce we have another 5 or 6 pieces to sell, all portraits and one landscape. Thresher's paintings are a combination of Fauvism, Impressionism and Expressionism. He utilized a combination of styles that were just on the cusp of being created by very important artists. His unique take on the Fauvism style was being done as early as 1900 in Massachusetts when at the same time it was just being introduced in France. There is virtually no information out there on Thresher and we are currently researching if he went to art school. He is incredibly gifted and his work should be in museums, especially his earlier work such as the ones we are offering. We noted his later paintings to be softer with less aggression and less paint. His pastels are quite brilliant as well. If Thresher had been in the right circle or the right location he perhaps would have been noted with the likes of Van Gogh and other greats from the late 20th and early 20th century. This pastel painting is over 100 years old and depicts a portrait of a seated blonde hair girl. She is likely a family member for we have sold oil painting portraits in the past of the same girl (see worthpoint online). Boasts pleasing lines. Great capture of light, shadow and emotion. Unsigned but guaranteed to be the above mentioned artist. Medium is oil pastel on paper. (Note: A few of his portraits are on academy board from the late 1890s). He did not use gesso and painted his oil directly onto the board. Framed under glass in an antique wood frame and ready to hang. In Good overall condition. Moderate wear and spotting but still displays quite brilliantly as is. It is also worth noting his landscapes are quite exceptional, as well as his floral still life's. We will be listing 5 more portraits and 1 landscape as well this weekend. This pastel measures 14” x 10 1/2” and 16 1/4” x 12 3/4” with the frame.
