Description: For sale is an interesting deep dish made in China and decorated in England in the mid 18th century . It once belonged to the Bernard Watney collection and was then sold about 20 years ago by an auction house as having been painted in West Pans (the factory that came after Longton Hall). A much more likely option seems to be that is was painted by James Giles either senior or junior. I have no way of figuring out which one it was or even if there is a way to tell them apart. Either way it is a superb plate / dish that is hand painted with some a really nice floral arrangement as well as single flowers ad some bugs of which the butterfly is just amazing! The glaze has that nice blue tinge to it which is hard to find and much nicer than just plain white. The edge has a light brown trim to it and there is some evidence left that it was gilded over. The saucer dish is in great condition with the gold edge trim mostly gone, a little wear to the painting - mainly on the one bug and a tight hairline to the rim as shown (from both views). So tight that the piece still rings nicely. The piece is not marked underneath but definitely Chinese Export that was painted in England / London . It was a must have for me since I did not own anything like it yet. The piece is 1.5 inches tall and 8.625 inches in diameter.
