Description: “Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup was a patent medicine first introduced in the 19th century and marketed to calm small children, clean teeth, freshen breath, and relieve constipation. Its colorful advertising, including trading cards and calendars, showed happy, peaceful babies cradled by beautiful new mothers. Unknown to parents, each bottle contained a dangerous amount of morphine and alcohol. Patent medicines were treatments that could be purchased without a prescription. They were commercially protected by trademarks and rarely ever patented. Consumers did not know the contents of patent medicines, including the ones they gave their children.” There were addictions and some fatalities. This medicine was specifically targeted by the Pure Food and drug act in 1906. This bottle dates to the late 1890’s. It stands 5” high and is nicely embossed all around “MRS. WINSLOW’S SOOTHING SYRUP THE ANGLO-AMERICAN DRUG CO SUCCESSORS TO CURTIS AND PERKINS PROPRIETORS”. It is light aqua and an inch around. There is a “28” embossed on the base. It is in dug condition and has had a rough life in the soil with interesting stains and minor scratching but no damage. The shape and embossing make it a very desirable addition to your medicine collection.
