Description: “La Lettre Du Front” This antique mantel clock is a stunning piece of French artistry from the Victorian era. The clock is sculpted in spelter which was commonly used during the 1800s due to the fact that it aged like bronze and was easier to work in details with than actual bronze. The piece is laid on a swirl of pink, black and cream colored marble accents. The clock is signed by the sculptor Par Coffin and also is titled “La Lettre Du Front” (The letter from the front). This probably refers to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and reflects a woman reading a letter from her lover who is fighting on the front. THIS CLOCK IS NOT RUNNING and I’m not sure if all of the parts are there. I offer her as a beautiful work of art but it’s your decision to restore the mechanisms. Although in great shape she has some expected age wear and flaws like a chip on the top of the enamel clock face which does not show with the glass cover closed. Also she is missing her feet and sits directly on the marble base. The clock measures 19 inches in length, 14 inches in height, and 6 inches in width. It is an original piece and has not been reproduced. This mantel clock would make a great addition to any collection and is a true masterpiece of French art.
