DL consignment. Shelved Room C. NOTES John Anthony Burgess Wilson was born February 25, 1917 in Manchester, England. Burgess lived a very solitary childhood, his mother and sister dying when he was just a year old from the 1918 flu pandemic, something for which his father seemingly resented Burgess for until his father's passing in 1938, shortly followed by his stepmother's own death in 1940. In 1940, Burgess entered into military service where he would serve until 1946. During his time in the military, Burgess would be introduced to communism which helped color his most known novel "A Clockwork Orange". Burgess spent several years teaching both in the UK and abroad, traveling to Malaya and Brunei to teach with the British Colonial Service. After a brief brain tumor scare, Burgess returned to England to write full-time thanks to an inheritance from his father-in-law and some success with his writing. A trip in 1961 to Leningrad gave Burgess the inspiration for the Nadsat slang used in "A Clockwork Orange". "A Clockwork Orange" released in 1962, supposedly written as a spur of the moment novel written in 3 weeks. Burgess's inspirations were the changes in England upon his arrival, a general existential fear about juvenile delinquency, and the assault of his wife by four American soldiers during World War II. The novel thus takes place in a near-future society where the youth culture is one of ultraviolence, relishing in the violence inflicted upon others. It deals primarily with the concept of free will filtered through the lens of behaviorism. "A Clockwork Orange" released to generally positive reviews, many hailing it's comedic horror and wit. Critics of the book noted its almost over-indulgence of violence. The novel has received several adaptations; a 1965 film by Andy Warhol titled "Vynil" was the first film adaptation, a manga adaptation by Osamu Tezuka released in 1983 titled (translation) "Clockwork Apple", and a musical adaptation from the Royal Shakespeare Company in London released in 1990 among several others. The most popular adaptation of "A Clockwork Orange" is by far the 1971 movie of the same name directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Malcolm McDowell. The movie released to mixed reviews, and after some copycat acts of violence were reported following it's UK release it was pulled from cinemas in the UK and several other countries. This only served to fuel a cult following which has only grown in the years since it's release and bans. Seller ID: 1387205 Subject: Literature Welcome to the eBay store of Second Story Books!
