Andris NelsonsBorn November 18, 1978 in Riga, the then-Republic of Latvia, the Soviet Union. His father was a chorus conductor and cellist, and his mother was a musical family who founded the first early music ensemble in Latvia. He studied piano early on, began learning trumpet at the age of 12, and became a trumpet player in the Latvian National Opera Orchestra. He then studied conducting with Alexander Titov in St. Petersburg and attended the master classes of Neeme Järvi and Jorma Panula. He caught the eye of Mariss Jansons when he replaced an emergency trumpet player at the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, where he began to study conducting from 2002. He became music director of the Latvian National Opera in 2003 and served until 2007. He was appointed Principal Conductor of the Norddeutsche Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006 and served until 2009, and in 2008 he was appointed Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and served until 2015. During this time, in October 2009, he conducted "Tourandot" at the Metropolitan Opera, and in the summer of 2010, he conducted "Lohengrin" at the Bayreuth Festival, and made his debut in March 2011 at Carnegie Hall for the first time in Boston.
