He was married to Dorothy Irene Winship on Nov. 4, 1945, in Fairfield, MT. He was a retired Air Force World War II veteran, serving on a B-17 crew before being shot down on his 13th mission and spending two years in a German prisoner of war camp before escaping during a transfer. After the war, he served as a recording officer and recruiter in the Air Force. He later wrote this book about his experiences entitled "And There I Was."
