Description: This First Edition copy of An Eulogy on the Life of General George Washington, Who died at Mount Vernon, December 14, 1799, in the 68th year of his age, was written at the request of the citizens of Newburyport, and delivered at the first Presbyterian Meeting-House in that town on January 2, 1800. The eulogy was printed at Newburyport by Edmund M. Blunt. The original printed copy of the eulogy names the author as Thomas Paine, but the author afterward had his name changed to Robert Treat Paine, in order that he might not be confounded with Thomas Paine, author of Common Sense. The original copy also contained 22 pages of text, this copy is missing pages 19-22. The booklet, which measures approximately 5.5 x 7.75 inches, has been bound, apparently by the Western Reserve Historical Society, in gray stiff cardboard covers with brown cloth on the spine, and white tape on the inside to attach the text pages and free end papers to the covers. The Western Reserve Historical Society has also attached their bookplate to the inside front cover. There is a paste-on tag on the front cover that shows the title of the eulogy and, hand written, the names Robert Treat and the birth & death dates of the author – the dates being inconsistent with those listed in Wikipedia. The pages of the text are tanned, but the text is clear and easily read. There are occasional hand written notes on the cover and some pages. The overall condition of the text is good, but considering the missing pages and cover/page markings, the overall condition of the item is fair. The Illustrations accompanying this description show the front cover, the bookplate of the Western Reserve Historical Society, the Title pages of the eulogy, and two 2-page spreads of the eulogy text. George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) was an American Founding Father, military officer, and politician who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Appointed by the Second Continental Congress as commander of the Continental Army in 1775, Washington led Patriot forces to victory in the American Revolutionary War and then served as president of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, which drafted the current Constitution of the United States. Washington has thus become commonly known as the "Father of his Country". [Wikipedia] Robert Treat Paine (March 11, 1731– May 11, 1814) was a lawyer, politician and Founding Father of the United States who signed the Continental Association and Declaration of Independence as a representative of Massachusetts. He served as the state's first attorney general and as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court. [Wikipedia]
