Description: An American Journey: Our Italian Heritage - The Story of Immigrants and Their Descendants, 1998 This book is one of a thematic group of books I am listing focused History. From one of the first few pages of the book “Canastota began its modern history in 1810 when founder Captain Reuben Perkins purchased land from the State of New York. This land was originally part of Oneida Indian Territory and it has been reported that Captain Perkinds paid the Oneidas over $2000.00 for four buildings located on the property. As we know, Canastota’s Main Street is not the main street. With the building of the Erie Canal, Canastota began to grow eastward, thus began the settlement of Peterboro Street as “the main street.”” The coming of the Erie Canal and the railroad as well as the Industrial Revolution all had an effect on the development and growth of Canastota and area. The industrial revolution meant the invention and development of machinery capable of draining the fertile wetlands north of the village thus making the land attractive as “muck farms.” Although locals originally farmed the mucklands it did not take long for the newest immigrants, the Italians, to discover that rich farmland. The Italian immigrants were a hard-working addition to the community. They were willing to work long hours at low pay for the chance to some day own their own homes and land. Along with farming, they worked on the railroad and in construction. They were responsible for laying the bricks to form Peterborro and Main Streets. They built cinder blocks and then erected buildings such as the old Methodist Church, now known as “Greystone.” As they became part of the community many went into the service industry, first operating boarding houses for other immigrants and then operating grocery stores, restaurants, taverns and other retail businesses.
