Description: Staffordshire Childs Transferware Creamer Milk Jug STAG REINDEER Charles Allerton & Sons c. 1880 This gorgeous brown aesthetic transferware children's creamer or milk jug, circa 1880, was originally part of a child's tea set. The round melon-shaped pitcher stands 3-1/2 inches tall, transfer printed in a rich sepia brown. The piece features a noble stag reindeer basking in the moonlight in a meadow surrounded by mountains. This beautiful scene is framed by an aesthetic background of branches, fern, scrolls, a sailboat and a smattering of geometrical whimsies, leaving very little white space. The jug was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a 19th century pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England well known for his whimsical children's teasets. The pattern is known as "Stag". It is marked 'Staffordshire England'. The pitcher is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people are drawn to it...not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not always aligned neatly, and there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge crizzling original to the making. The naïve and hasty style adds to the folksy charm. Overall crazing, consistent with age. Sold as is, as shown and as described. Brown aesthetic transferware depicting wild animals is hard to find and highly sought after, and cherished by nature and animal lovers! This antique creamer will make a stunning addition to any collection of Aesthetic movement dishes. We have listed other early children's transferware this week.
