Description: Looking at this painting evokes the beach. The texture on the canvas reminds one of the grittiness of the sand between your toes. Your eyes take in the water and you can hear the waves crashing on the shore. Take one look at the birds and it initiates the sounds of the laughing gulls. The painting itself is 24"X18", with the frame it is 30"X24"X2". Allan Dudley Jones Jr., 1915 – 1989. An American painter, using mainly acrylic and a master of the dry brush technique. Jones said, “Writers, musicians and artists express themselves through their works. I could say therefore: to know about me, know my paintings.”His art is in private collections, as well as the Virginia Museum of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Chrysler Museum of Norfolk, and High Museum of Atlanta. Commissioned paintings are in the Peninsula Hellenic Center, Newport News Public Library, and Newport News City Hall. His diorama of the Monitor and the Merrimac hangs in the Mariners’ Museum of Newport News, Virginia. He lived in Hampton, Virginia with his wife Jean, and raised two children. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the University of Pennsylvania (BFA). He taught art at William and Mary, University of Virginia, and Virginia Wesleyan College.
