There were four Academy Award nominations, including those to Leigh and Hitchcock and one for the black and white photography. Hitchcock not only filmed in black and white for mood and to cut expense but had taken a look at the success of recent bad low budget horror films, which had made tremendous money. He felt a good low budget black and white horror film should do extremely well. Made for well under $1 million, the film earned $40 million.
