Description: This is a very fine watercolor painting featuring the distinctive profile of the dominant mountain in Marin County, California, just north of San Francisco, Mount Tamalpais. The artist was the very well listed watercolorist ALFRED VILLIERS FARNSWORTH (1858-1908). Farnsworth signed the painting at lower right and dated it there 1901. This view is from the north side, approximately near San Anselmo, looking south. A crescent moon at upper left adds poetry and there is more poetry in the reflection of that moon in the foreground waters, and in the two tiny figures in a small row boat at center among the reeds. The light as dusk comes on, and the hushed stillness, permeate the scene, as in the best of the Hudson River School paintings. The artist was born into an upper class family in northern England. He received art training there and in Paris, before moving on to Canada and then Spokane, Washington before landing in San Francisco in 1892. He worked as an artist for the Examiner newspaper there and increasingly produced skilled watercolor paintings of the coastal landscapes around San Francisco and the Bay. He was an alcoholic and died at fifty, but left behind a fine legacy---a body of work that salutes the beautiful landscapes of northern San Francisco Bay, the coast, and Golden Gate before the bridge. This work appears to be in excellent, clean condition (not examined out of frame). Dimensions are 13 1/4" by 20 1/2" inside the mat (20 1/4" by 28 1/4" framed). Farnsworth watercolors have been offered by fine galleries and sold in a number of high end California auctions. ALLOW FOR REFLECTIONS IN SOME OF THE IMAGES.
