Mikhnov-Vaitenko and A. Yu. ChernovIllustrations by D. M. Plaksin The work of Alexander Galich (1918-1977), poet, playwright, and songwriter, became one of the symbols of the tragic epoch of insight and resistance of the Soviet intelligentsia in the 1960s and 1970s. Galich's songs, which in their time were distributed in thousands of tape copies, had an extraordinary power of influence on several generations of compatriots. The last almost three and a half years of Galich's life were spent in the West in forced emigration. During this time he continued to compose poems and songs, performed concerts. On his return to his homeland he wrote: "My only dream - hope, faith, happiness, satisfaction - is that I will always return to this land. And if I am dead, I will return to it for sure."This edition is an almost complete collection of Galich's poetic heritage. The texts are printed (with corrections and clarifications) according to his first posthumous book, published in 1981 and republished in 1986 by the emigre publishing house "Posev" - "When I Return: A Complete Collection of Poems and Songs". Illustrations by the famous graphic artist David Plaksin were created especially for this edition. The appendix contains extensive commentary and a chronicle of Galich's life, written by St. Petersburg literary scholar Pavel Matveev. For this, the second edition of the book, A. Galich's texts have been verified from additional sources and clarified, and corrections have been made in the appendices section.
