Description: Al Capp. (1909-1979). American cartoonist and humorist. Best known for his satirical comic strip Li'l Abner. 8.5x11 typed illustrated letter signed, with stamped envelope with illustration on verso, March 7, 1957, to a professor of journalism. “My fee for speaking to scholastic groups like yours is $350 and expenses. Now, I don't know whether I will be free on May 3rd, but if you can afford this amount, let me know and then I will let you know if I can make it. Best, Al Capp.” Unfortunately, this letter makes Mr. Capp look like a cheapskate. Perhaps he wasn't aware that this was a charity affair and none of the participants, such as Eleanor Roosevelt, ever charged for their services. Besides charging for his presence, Capp wrote that he wasn't even sure if he even be free on the date of the event. Provenance: This letter from Al Capp came from the estate of Richard E. Werner. In the 1950s and 1960s, Professor Werner headed the journalism department of the now-defunct Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey. He was also the chairman of the Annual Journalism Day, which took place every March in New York City. To make the event a success, Professor Werner wrote to many famous people, including John F. Kennedy, Herbert Hoover, Eleanor Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson, and Edward R. Murrow. Not every celebrity attended, but they all wrote back. After the professor’s death, a collector purchased these letters and sold them to me, and I’m now selling them on eBay.
