Description: A.Kaufman (Austrian, 1848–1916) Original Oil Painting on Canvas Adolf Kaufmann was an Austrian artist known for his landscape and maritime paintings, exploring similar themes and motifs to Abraham Hulk the Elder and Pierre Abbatucci is his realistic artworks. The soft colors and tones display an influence of Théodore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet, and the Barbizon School on Kaufmann’s development as a painter. Born on May 15, 1848 in Troppau, Austrian Silesia (now Opava, Czech Republic), the largely self-taught artist received instruction in Paris from Emile van Marcke de Lummen. Kaufmann enjoyed acclaim in the city and returned to France to work periodically after settling in Vienna in 1890, signing his French pieces as “A. Guyot.” He became a member of both Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts and Künstlerhaus before his death in the capital city on November 25, 1916. The painting signed lower left. Unframed.
