Description: Richard Ranft (1862–1931) after J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851), Ulysses Deriding Polyphemus. Aquatint and dry-point on wove paper, plate 29 x 18 ¾, framed 36 ¾ x 26. Signed in the lower right margin in pencil ‘Richard Ranft’ with ascription ‘J. M. W. Turner, Ulyssis [sic] deriding Polyphemus’ added in pencil in a different hand, now hidden under the mat. A fine and exceedingly rare aquatint by Ranft of Turner’s painting in the National Gallery, London. The scene is from Book Nine of Homer’s Odyssey, when Odysseus vaingloriously proclaims his true identity to the cyclops Polyphemus, from whose murderous clutches he and his men have just escaped. As often in Turner’s historical paintings, the actual subjects are lost in the grand scale of the composition: Odysseus (Ulysses) is little more than a pair of outstretched arms just to the right of the leftmost sail of the ship, while Polyphemus is the black shadow rising above the clouds. Ranft was a prolific painter, engraver, and illustrator. Guillaume Apollinaire sang his praises in a review of an exhibition of his in June, 1910, and acknowledged Ranft as the greatest interpreter of Turner’s work.
