Adrien Marie (October 20, 1848 – April 29, 1891) was a French engraver, illustrator, painter, and traveler. Biography Adrien Emmanuel Marie studied woodcut under François Pannemaker and Guillaume Cabasson. He was admitted to the École des beaux-arts de Paris, in the studio of Isidore Pils. He made his debut producing images for L'Illustration. He is close to Emile Bayard, whose daughter he would later marry. Bayard put him in touch with publisher Albert Lacroix in 1862, in order to illustrate Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. In 1869, for the publisher Alexandre Houssiaux, he illustrated Les Lettres de mon moulin by Alphonse Daudet and, in 1874, this time for Hachette, La Fille de Carilès by Josephine Columbus. In the same year, he produced 16 drawings to illustrate A Wintering in the Ice by Jules Verne published by Hetzel1 and two drawings for A Drama in the Airs, which appeared under the name of his father-in-law Émile Bayard. Reporter-draftsman for L'Illustration, he followed the performance of Doctor Ox at the Théâtre des Variétés on February 3, 1877. Its print then makes the title page of the magazine2. It was presumably in these years (circa 1874-1878) that he produced a pencil portrait of Jules Verne in profile3. In 1880 he was also credited with prints for theatrical adaptation by Michael Strogoff. Having become a prolific illustrator of the French and London press, he produced many drawings, prints but also paintings that he presented at the Salon. In 1884 he teamed up again with Bayard for illustrations in Alphonse Daudet's Selected Tales. He is also a cartoonist-correspondent for Le Monde illustré, Music & Drama, La Saison théâtrale, Paris illustré. It illustrates James Tissot's report on London for Paris-Christmas 1886-1887. Adrien Marie made many trips in parallel with his artistic career, journeys that inspired paintings, such as A Moment of Beauty that depicts a geisha in the middle of a makeup session, or this watercolor, Antibes, era des orange trees (1883) autographed to Jules Hetzel. He is the author of drawings of an ascent that Hetzel Jr. made with Gaston Tissandier accompanying an anonymous article from Le Monde illustré dated August 14, 18874. In addition, he is credited with historical scenes such as Bacchanal Over the Sea or Hannibal's The Passage of the Alps, as well as landscapes such as Cows by the River. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris in 1866, 1881 and 1889. In 1886 he participated in the second International Black and White Exhibition where he won the gold medal in the drawing section5. In 1889, Cuban poet, writer, journalist, and politician José Martí took up many illustrations by Adrien Marie in his children's magazine La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age) published between July and September 1889 in New York. In 1891, he was sent by L'Illustration to accompany Henri-François Brosselard-Faidherbe's mission to French Guinea, a mission whose objective was to study the possibility of tracing a railway line through this territory. He is accompanied by journalist Félix Dubois. The group departs Benty on the Mellacorea and travels up Grande-Scarcie (present-day Sierra Leone) then reaches Falaba where he finds himself blocked by Samory; the men must turn around. The mission nevertheless managed to map over 20,000 km2 and establish the rail route from Benty to Farana. Returning exhausted, ill, Adrien Marie died as a result of this trip to Cadiz on April 29, 1891.
