Description: Welcome toMAD MONK BOOKS BOOK TITLETHE PIONEER BOY AND HOW HE BECAME PRESIDENTAUTHORW. M. ThayerPUBLISHERHodder and Stoughton,27 Patternoster Row,LondonDATE1885SIZE7 3/8" tall, 5 3/8" deep, 1 1/2" thick.PAGES395 EXTERIOR CONDITIONThis book is beautifully bound in dark burgundy 3/4 leather (spine and corners). The binding has five raised leather bands, and the title of the book THE PIONEER BOY--THAYER appears in gold gilt on the spine of the book. The front and rear covers are covered with a handsome marbled paper in burgundy and caramel colors with blind stamped lining along the edges of the burgundy leather corners and spine. The binding shows moderate rubbing, bumping and scuffing for a book of this age (over 140 years old). The leather on the face of the spine has hairline cracking from top to bottom with approximately 1/8" to 1/4" of leather loss at the top and bottom edges of the spine. There is a bit of leather loss at the four corners of the book, but the boards remain relatively sharp, square and firm (not rounded and soft). There is a two inch crack at the top of the front hinge and a 1/2" crack at the top of the rear hinge. The calf leather shows small closed cracking along the front and rear exterior hinges from top to bottom. Although the front and rear exterior hinges show these signs of wear and use, both the front and rear exterior hinges appear to be holding nicely and remain quite functional. The top, bottom and side "edges" of the cover boards have lost a little bit of paper covering here and there. However, these "edges" have been nicely touched-up with colored markers, enhancing their appearance to the point that the paper loss is hardly noticeable (see attached photos). The gold gilt on the spine of the book has lost a bit of its original luster, but the title and author of the book is still clearly visible. The exterior page edges of the book are a beautiful burgundy marbled design with very little age toning and/or dust dulling. The book stands straight and tall on its own and is not cocked. At rest, the book does not pop open, but closes tightly. Overall this book appears sturdy, handsome and beautifully aged in its dark burgundy leather binding. This 140 year old book about our most beloved Civil War president Abraham Lincoln, would make a fine addition to any library. A picture is worth a thousand words--see attached photos for more detail. INTERIOR CONDITIONThe front and rear endpapers are a beautiful burgundy and caramel marbled color, matching the exterior cover boards. The paste down portion of the front and rear endpapers are both holding firmly to the boards. The text block remains tight with no loose signatures. There are no loose or missing pages throughout the book. The pages throughout the book are crisp, clean, lightly and evenly age toned with only a hint of "foxing" on a handful of front and rear pages (see attached photos as an example). The page corners remain sharp and square with no folded corners. There are no signatures, inscriptions, pen or pencil markings throughout the pages of the book. The book has no smoke, mildew or other unusual odors. Overall, the interior of the book appears as if it was rarely (if ever) read from cover to cover. A picture is worth a thousand words--see attached photos for more detail. SHIPPINGTHE MAD MONK ships all books via USPS MEDIA MAIL unless otherwise stated.
