Abolitionist Lyman Abbott Worked With Henry Ward Beecher; Offers Introduction

Description: LYMAN ABBOTT (1835-1922) was an American Congregational theologian, editor, author and abolitionist. Born in Roxbury, MA, Lyman graduated from the New York University. He was admitted to the bar in 1856, but became a minister after studying theology with his uncle, John Stevens Cabot Abbot. He was pastor of the Congregational Church in Terre Haute, Indiana from 1860 to 1865, and of the New England Church in New York City from 1865 to 1869. From 1865 to 1868, he was secretary of the American Union Commission (later called the American Freedmen’s Bureau). He worked in the publishing profession as an associate editor of Harper’s Magazine and the founder of the Christian Weekly. He also co-edited The Christian Union with Henry Ward Beecher. He succeeded Beecher as pastor of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn and wrote the official biography of Beecher and edited his papers.
