A Sermon on the Parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus 1829 2d ed. Whittemore

Description: A Sermon on the Parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus By Thomas Whittemore George W. Bazin Boston, Mass. 1829 Disbound, lacking wrappers, but all pages present. "No. 17" written above the title on the titlepage. At the time of publication, the author was Pastor of the First Universalist Society in Cambridge. 22, [2] p.[in all 24 numbered and unnumbered pages]; 21.5 cm. (8.5 inches). As noted, wrappers lacking. Sewn text block. Includes Notes A and B Stated Second Edition "It is a command of our Lord and Saviour that we 'search the Scriptures' and of the Apostle Paul, that we 'prove all things; hold fast that which is good.' Therefore, notwithstanding many learned and good men have advocated the doctrine of endless misery, and adduced the text as proof of it, we cannot receive it because they have believed it, nor our text as proof of it, because it has been used as such. We receive no doctrine until we are convinced of its truth by evidence. Whenever our views of Christianity agree with those of our brethren of other denominations, we feel no small degree of pleasure in making it known; but we feel it our imperious duty openly to avow our difference from them, when their views seem to us to disagree with the plainest passages of scripture, and the simplest dictates of reason" [opening paragraph of the sermon.] Thomas Whittemore (1800-1861) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1800; his father was a baker. Having failed as an apprentice in several trades, he met Hosea Ballou (1771-1852), an influential Universalist preacher, who agreed to help the relatively uneducated Whittemore with his grammar and ultimately encouraged him to study for the ministry. Soon, Whittemore became a Universalist preacher in Cambridge, Mass. In 1822 he became co-editor of the Universalist Magazine, and in 1828, he established a successor magazine, the Trumpet and Universalist Magazine, which he owned and edited until shortly before his death. Through his preaching, his editorship of the Trumpet and Universalist Magazine, his founding of the Universalist Historical Society in 1834, his extensive publications, his five years as a representative from Cambridge in the Massachusetts legislature, his service as a selectman and then alderman in Cambridge, and his presidency of the Cambridge Bank and of the Vermont and Massachusetts Railroad, he became one of the most influential Universalists in the 19th century. A passionate lover of music, who had taken voice and cello lessons, Whittemore published Songs of Zion, in 1836 and Gospel Harmonist in 1841. Pamphlet is in Good Condition: as noted, wrappers lacking; pages are intact, still holding together where sewn, generally clean and all unmarked; some scattered foxing and creasing; pp. 9-12 roughly opened at the fore-edge leaving jagged edges, but not impacting the text.
