Kinsey, a tough, independent, and resourceful detective, operates in the fictional California town of Santa Teresa, modeled after Santa Barbara.Grafton crafted Kinsey as a no-nonsense, sharp-witted loner with a dry sense of humor. She often works on cases involving murder, missing persons, or personal disputes, narrated in the first person. Kinsey's practical demeanor, minimalistic lifestyle, and moral code have made her an iconic figure in detective fiction.
