Description: An example of the splendid and appealing naive, folk art painting style of early Northern California artist A. CEDRO, featuring a mountain lake surrounded by trees, distant snow-capped mountains, several small figures in boats completing the scene. Measurements are 22 1/2" by 35" (27" by 40" framed). The artist, A. CEDRO, is a vague figure known to have had a Russian background. He painted in Southern Oregon and extreme Northern California at the end of the 19th century. Murals are known by his hand in Medford, OR, Yreka, CA and Alturas, CA. Cedro was the staff artist on the Perry expedition to the North Pole in 1909, and paintings depicting that trip have appeared at auction. Cedro as an artistic force appears to transcend the typical Northern California Hudson River style painting, having carved out a significant niche at regional auctions, where his folky paintings have performed very well. See the Hughes listing. This painting has been well cared for, having come from the home of a physician in Sherman Oaks, CA. Written on the back is "Early American Primitive/Restored 1965 (cleaned)/Rebacked 1985.". The relining has stabilized what was likely a thin canvas. At the time of relining it is possible that some small old tears or weak spots were addressed, as there are some yellowed areas in the sky that may have been worked on---but black light examination does not show major overpaint. The canvas is also not perfectly flat at upper left. Overall an excellent, well-preserved example of the artist's rare work, on the original stretcher.
