Description: This book contains 95 single page black and white photos, with captions. Included are a few pages of text taken from the 1936 edition of The Edward Clarence Plummer History of Bath by Henry Wilson Owen. Bath was preeminently a good place to live in the Gay Nineties, though Bath folks of today might consider it primitive in respect to so called modern improvements. That was the age of the safety bicycle, a good one cost from $100 to $150, the former about the standard price by the end of the century. In 1891 the water works were four years old and the electric lights somewhat less. Quite a number of houses had bathrooms, but they were by no means universal. Many of the richer and more pretentious houses were still lighted with Welsbach gas burners, and many of the poorer ones with oil lamps. After the local trolley line was opened in August, 1893, one of the popular diversions was a pleasure ride in the open cars. In 1898 it became possible to trolley ride to Lewiston, and in 1900, to Portland. and beyond. Half a dozen steamers of various sizes were required to handle the traffic between Bath and Boothbay and the islands, four or five round trips per day in summer. A steamer arrived in Boston each morning and departed each evening in summer, usually with every stateroom taken and the steerage full.
