Description: Common Milkweed(Asclepias Syriaca) PinkUntreated Organic Home Grown SeedsAll my seeds are produced from flowers that were open pollinated and organically home-grown in Illinois, USA. -- (Guaranteed No pesticides, non-GMO, and NOT from China.) Seeds are sorted for viability and germination tested prior to the current season. Majority Germination guaranteed if kept moist and standard growing instructions are followed. Ordering Info: One unit = 1/2 tsp. of Seeds = average 75 seeds If you order more than one, I will multiply the amount of seeds only. I will only divide them into separate packets as needed. You are welcome to message me with a request for a specific amount of labeled packets/envelopes. (For example: for gifting purposes.) Please allow up to 14 business days for "Snail Mail" to deliver your order after it is "marked as shipped". (Average time = 1 week) To keep the cost down I use a standard 1st class Letter envelope; therefore I cannot provide a tracking number for regular orders. If you are willing to pay more for faster delivery and tracking on your regular order, message me to make that arrangement. (If the option is not available in the listing.) ***Ordering in bulk, or more than 4 Seed types, and combining shipping, will mean a bigger envelope with the cost of tracking included. If your order has not arrived after 2 weeks, please message me right away. I will declare it to be Lost/Damaged if you haven't received it before 3 weeks after your purchase date. By that time I will re-send your order at no charge, unless another arrangement is agreed upon. No need to open a claim. I'm happy to help. Sowing: In late fall surface sow to overwinter and sprout in the spring or freeze 1-3 months and surface sow in the spring when ground temps are above 60 degrees. The seeds need light, moisture, and warmth to germinate. (It may be helpful to soak seeds 2-3 days. in warm water before sowing.) Flowers: Flowers occur in round ball clusters about 2" in diameter. Individual flowers are small (1/2" round), consisting of five petals, pink to purple in color. They bloom from June through August, and have a wonderful sweet fragrance. Leaves: Leaves are large and oval in shape (4-8" long and 2-4" wide). Large leaves feed many caterpillars. Fruit: Large seedpods (3 to 5 inches long) contain up to 200 flat, brown seeds. Information:Milkweed grows to heights of 2-6 feet on solitary stalks. Many insects are attracted to milkweed flowers, making them an ideal landscaping plant for attracting pollinators and beneficial insects. This perennial native plant was once seen in abundance along roadsides and open fields throughout all of the eastern and mid-western states. However, milkweed habitat is being lost throughout the US due to development, agricultural practices, and mowing of roadside stands, posing a threat to Monarch populations. Milkweed is an important and required food source for the Monarch caterpillar. Monarch butterflies only lay their eggs on milkweed leaves. Then their caterpillars feed on the leaves until they form their chrysalis. Toxins from the leaves protect them by accumulating in the Monarchs’ bodies, making them poisonous to their predators. Milkweed gets its name from the milky sap contained in its leaves and stems. Chemicals in this sap can be poisonous to mammals in large amounts. However, milkweed poisoning in dogs and cats is thankfully rare, unless your pet is prone to dining on terribly bitter tasting greenery. Tips for Observing: Plants have a strong, extensive rhizome (underground stem) root system.Common Milkweed will spread far and wide. It’s not uncommon to find the roots 12” deep and travel under poured sidewalks. If these are planted in a flower bed you will have to dig out the wanderers each year that come up in an area you don’t like or can’t be mowed off. The dug up roots, however, can be shared or transplanted elsewhere.
