A cold start valve releases trapped pressure between the compressor pump and the tank check valve at the end of the running cycle. Releasing this pressure allows the compressor to more easily restart at the beginning of the next cycle. 1/4 NPT size threads measure 1/2 inch on a ruler, .540" to be exact.
