Steel plates become grinding surfaces destroying the fragile friction plates plugging the filters with friction material. Modern friction plates aren't like old school brake pads. Steel plates must have a certain smoothness for the frictions to hold once applied. Compare it to trying to stick a suction cup on a window vs. a cardboard box.
