Description: This Listing is for ONE NEW Block of 4 George Mason 18¢ Stamps from 1981. Original undisturbed gum (dry and dull, but water-activated). Several blind imperforation errors can be seen in the photos (caused when a hole is not completely punched out during the printing process): Easily remedied if using for postage - by using scissors to cut the stamps apart; and possibly adding to the collector value because of this unique variation on this block of stamps. From a Smoke-Free and Pet-Free Environment. On May 7, 1981 in Mason Neck, VA, the U.S. Postal Service issued these George Mason 18¢ gummed stamps, one of 64 different stamps in the Great Americans Series, honoring special Americans who were leaders in education, the military, literature, the arts, and human and civil rights. The portrait of George Mason is by the artist, Richard Sparks. George Mason (1725-1792), American patriot and statesman, is considered one of the nation's "Founding Fathers." He was ahead of his time in insisting on the protection of individual liberties and criticizing the constitutional compromise that perpetuated the slave trade. He held a firm belief in strong local government and objected to the indefinite powers vested in the new government. Mason drafted the Virginia Constitution of 1776 and served as a delegate to the Federal Constitutional Convention of 1787. His criticism helped bring about the adoption of the Bill of Rights.
