(2) The print detail is much sharper than the photos of the print.Pulpit and the Episcopal Throne in the Church of St. Lawrence Extra Muros, Rme, Italy: A basilica built by Constantine over the Apostle's grave, S. Paolo Fuori le Mura (St. Paul's Outside the Walls, also called San Lorenzo) was replaced starting in 386 by a structure mammoth for its time, 328 by 170 feet. It was faithfully restored after a fire in 1823 and thus remains an outstanding example of early basilical architecture. It has a single eastern apse, a lofty transept, and five majestic nave aisles. Before the Muslim rampage around the walls in 846, the approach to the basilica was a mile-long colonnade down the Ostian Way from the Porta S. Paolo. Beneath the high altar in the crypt are the remains of St Lawrence, St Stephen and St Justin. It was during some work commissioned by Pope Pius IX in the 19C that the lower part of the 6C church and the narthex were discovered. There are two sets of steps leading down, one on each side of the chancel (if the gates are closed, enquire in the Sacristy).
