Thorn (1817 - 1898) family , these are family to family , Uncle to Niece , sister to sister Two are written by Rebecca Thorn , and signed Rebecca and G.W. Thorn One is Written to J.W. to his niece George was born on March 31, 1817, in Maidstone, Kent, England, the son of George Thorn and Ann Harding. George W. Thorn, and his family lived near the Wapsipinicon River in Clinton County, Iowa, where he established a saw mill, in 1844, on the west bank. In 1846, he built a grist mill, and in 1850 started a store. As the saw mill, grist mill, and store were the only ones around for miles, by 1853 the town of Toronto began, George, naming it so, for Toronto, Canada, where he grew up. George Thorn was married to Lucinda Shriver on June 29, 1843, in Cedar County, Iowa. In 1854, at about the same time as Jesse Stine's marriage to his sister-in-law Phoebe Shriver, George became a partner with Jesse in the general store in Toronto, Clinton County, Iowa.
