Commentary and text for this work were written by C.F.C. Kleemann. Haarlem and Amsterdam: C.H. Bohn and H. Gartman, 1765-1782. Corresponding text pages available on request. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'A.I. Rosel van Rosenhof' after own design. Augustus Johannes Rosel von Rosenhof (1705-59) was a German miniature painter, and naturalist and entomologist. Roesel studied painting with his father and uncle, and later with the renowned Preisler in Nuremberg. While living in Copenhagen, he became inspired by the work of Maria Sibylla Merian. He returned to Nuremberg to devote himself largely to entomological studies and illustration, aided by his wife who hand colored his drawings and his son in law, who assisted in the publishing of his superbly illustrated scientific works. Roesel also did much of the engraving for his works. Subject: 3 Antique prints, titled: ''Classis I. Papiliionum Nocturnorum. Tab. VII-IX.'' - These prints show: Tab. VII: ''Beschryving der Moerbezien-Rups, of van den zogenoemden Zyworm'' (Description of the Morus alba caterpillar, or the so-called Silkworm). Tab VIII: ''Vervolg van de Rupsen en Vlinders der voorigen'' (Continuation of the Caterpillars and Moths of the former [Tab VII]). Tab IX: ''Beschryving der Zydevaten &c. van den Zyworm'' (Description of the Silk-glands, etc. of the Silkworm). The silkworm is the larva of the domestic silkmoth (Bombyx mori) that lives on white mulberry. It is shown here in various stages of development, and with details of the salivary glands that produce the raw silk. Also shows a dissected specimen.Condition: Very good, given age.
