Description: Pair of Flow Blue Childs Pearlware Miniature Dinner Set Plates ASIATIC BIRD on TREE BRANCH Charles Meigh Staffordshire England 1850 This is a very scarce set of 2 miniature flow blue plates dated 1850, originally part of a complete miniature children's dinner service. The tiny rounded plate measure 3-5/8 inches across with a flat rimless base and 10 panel rim. Brilliant cobalt or flow blue transfer printed decoration finished with pearlware glaze, extremely well potted, to the standards usually only seen in full-size Staffordshire table wares. Decorated with a Romantic Chinoiserie image of an Asiatic pheasant or oriental bird perched on a tree branch, bordered with contrasting bamboo edge. The plates are unmarked. The pattern, sometimes called Asiatic Pheasant, is documented by Doris Lechler as pattern #223. The pattern is also discussed on page 113 in Milbourn's Understanding Miniature British Pottery & Porcelain. The plates are in overall fair condition - suitable for display - one with a glaze flake within its border and the other with a crack as shown. No other chips, cracks, or repairs. Stilt marks, dot of kiln fleck, light utensil wear, border transfer skip and other typical manufacturing imperfections, original to the making, consistent with age. Light crazing. A delicate little set to display in the finest dollhouse, a pocket size work of art! Children's flow blue soft paste of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. Offered as is, as described and as shown. Asking price reflects condition. We have also listed other early child's colorful transferware this week -- mix and match for a lovely collection.
