Description: Stunning vintage 24” tall Indonesian Wayang Golek Rod Puppet on a 2” stand. This wonderful piece of Indonesian Art has been meticulously handcrafted, with a carved and painted head, an elaborate headdress and a long neck that can swivel. A bib with sequins covers the torso and a long batik cotton skirt covers the main rod. The hands and arms are also carved of wood and are controlled by two more rods. Wayang Golek puppetry is an integral part of Indonesian heritage, often used to depict epic tales and moral teachings. In addition to being performed on stage Wayang Golek Puppets are often displayed in homes and temples and are believed to have spiritual powers. Our puppet is mounted on a stand allowing for easy display. Made approximately around 1940s/50s, possibly a little earlier, it is in very good vintage condition. There are signs of age and use but no major issues. The puppet has detached from the stand and the stand shows a crack. Please see photos for details and feel free to ask questions. Estate item.
