In 1914, Dirks left the THE KATZENJAMMER KIDS to start a very similar strip entitled THE CAPTAIN AND THE KIDS. Harold Knerr stepped in to replace Dirks on THE KATZENJAMMER KIDS. Knerr stayed on the job until his death in 1949. His replacement was Charles Winner. Joe Musial took over in 1956 and stayed until 1976. He succeeded by Mike Senich, who, in turn, was replaced by Angelo DeCesare in 1981. Hy Eisman assumed control of the strip in 1986 and saw the series through to its last original strip on January 1, 2006. King Features Syndicate continues to distribute reprints of earlier strips.
