Description: Canyon Diablo MeteoriteThe origin of Canyon Diablo meteorites is the most famous and well preserved impact site on earth; now knows a Meteor Crater. the original meteor is estimated to have had a mass of about 63,000 tons (about 80 feet in diameter). Calculations show that it may have traveled at a speed of about 9 miles per second during its catastrophic decent to earth. The resulting impact on the surface created a massive depression 560 feet deep,. 4,100 feet across, and having a circumference of over 3 miles. The impact obliterated roughly 50% of the main mass by vaporization while the remaining fragments were plated throughout the area. These meterorites are characterized with classic features such as thumb-printing, sharp edges, holes and bowls. Many contain inclusions of graphite. Occurrences of black diamond have also been found. Today the creater is operated as a private tourist attraction by the Meteor Crater Enterprise.
