This fragment was likely formed from debris, where metal scraps mixed with dust and grease formed a fairly durable object it was jammed into the die.This is also noticeable in the indentation from this fragment.There is a second error on this beautiful coin. Double Chin anomaly fits into the design as if it were part of it. And Sitkala-Sa has a visible layer of excess fat under the chin. This is certainly a big error by the US Mint.
