Description: 2020 Queen's Beasts White Lion of Mortimer 2 oz 0.9999 Silver Coins were purchased directly from The Royal Mint, already encapsulated. You will receive a very nice coin that has not been jostled in a tube. The eighth coin in the Queen's Beast series, the 2020 White Lion of Mortimer, features the fierce White Lion, clutching its shield. The White Lion of Mortimer descended to the Queen through Edward IV. The shield shows a white rose encircled by a sun, known as "white rose en soleil". Both of these appear on the Great Seals of Edward IV and Richard III, and were used by George VI while Duke of York. The White Lion is uncrowned, unlike the Lion of England. At the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen, ten heraldic beasts stood guard. The Queen’s Beasts, sculpted by James Woodford RA for the coronation ceremony held in Westminster Abbey in 1953, stand six feet tall. The heraldic creatures symbolized the various strands of royal ancestry brought together in a young woman about to be crowned queen. Each proud beast, used as a heraldic badge by generations that went before her, was inspired by the King’s Beasts of Henry VIII that still line the bridge over the moat at his Hampton Court Palace. Mintage is to be determined.
