The game matched two explosive but radically different offenses. Oklahoma State (12-1), a high scoring offense, averaging 49.3 points a game behind quarterback Brandon Weeden (4,328 passing, 34 touchdowns), and Justin Blackmon (14 consecutive games with 100 yards in receptions). Oklahoma State never led in the Fiesta Bowl until overtime. Falling behind 28-21 and 31-24 in the third quarter, the Cowboys knotted the score at 31-31 when Weeden found Blackmon on a 17-yard scoring pass with 11:53 remaining. It was the third overtime game in Fiesta Bowl history and first time both starting quarterbacks threw for more than 300 yards as Weeden finished with 399 and Luck, who completed 27 of 31 passes, had 347.
