The reasoning was that domestic needs exceeded that of strategic needs. Many refiners had actually opposed the plan due to concerns of diminishing the need of in-state mining and possible reduction of Silver spot at the time. Throughout the back-and-forth, the United States did end up selling-off large amounts of Silver (roughly 105 million troy ounces) but not as coin, as they had originally intended. When this happened, it did in fact cause the price of Silver to drop immediately. Many traders started unloading futures with the anticipation that price would fall, which it did. Over a span of several years and suspensions, it wasnt until June 21, 1985, that the senate finally agreed to an amendment by a voice vote. The amended bill was signed by President Reagan on July 9, 1985. The bill, know as the Liberty Coin Act authorized the law of the American Silver Eagle program with an effective date of October 1, 1985, but came with stipulations that no coins may be struck or sold until September 1, 1986. Finally, after all of this, the first American Silver Eagle was released on November 24, 1986, which has gone on to become one of the most beloved, best-selling coins in the world. The 2004 1 oz American Silver Eagle: The Walking Liberty Silver Dollar The 2004 1 oz American Silver Eagle, also known as the 2004 Walking Liberty Silver Dollar, showcases a design that has captured the hearts of collectors and enthusiasts for over a century. The obverse of the coin features the iconic Walking Liberty design, originally created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. This timeless design depicts Lady Liberty gracefully striding towards the rising sun, draped in the American flag. With her right hand extended, she carries branches of laurel and oak, symbolizing civil and military honors. The Walking Liberty design exudes a sense of freedom, beauty, and optimism that resonates with collectors and art enthusiasts alike. The reverse of the 2004 Walking Liberty Silver Dollar was skillfully designed by John Mercanti. It features a majestic heraldic eagle behind a shield, clutching a banner in its beak and holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons. This powerful image draws inspiration from the Great Seal of the United States and embodies the ideals of strength, liberty, and unity. Above the eagle, thirteen stars represent the original Thirteen Colonies, a nod to the rich history of America's founding. The reverse design by John Mercanti perfectly complements the elegance and significance of the Walking Liberty obverse, making the 2004 American Silver Eagle a true work of art.A Collectible and Valuable Coin As a highly sought-after coin, the 2004 1 oz American Silver Eagle holds both numismatic and investment value. Its impressive 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver content ensures its worth as a precious metal investment. The iconic Walking Liberty design, combined with the meticulous craftsmanship of the United States Mint, adds to the coin's desirability among collectors. Whether you are a passionate numismatist or an investor looking to diversify your portfolio, the 2004 Walking Liberty Silver Dollar offers both aesthetic appeal and inherent value. Don't miss the opportunity to own a piece of American history and add this remarkable coin to your collection or investment holdings.Direct from the U.S. Mint The U.S. Mint does not sell its bullion coins directly to the public.
