Description: Nice historical document on Germany's "Order or Merit" for Science and Art from its inception in 1842 up until 2002 that is NICELY INSCRIBED BY GERMAN AMERICAN HISTORIAN FRITZ STERN TO HIS AMERICAN FRIEND AND AUTHOR, MARION DESHMUKH. Before describing the book, here is background on Fritz Stern and Marion On Fritz Stern from Wikipedia: "Fritz Richard Stern (February 2, 1926 – May 18, 2016) was a German-born American historian of German history, Jewish history and historiography. He was a University Professor and a provost at New York's Columbia University. His work focused on the complex relationships between Germans and Jews in the 19th and 20th centuries and on the rise of National Socialism in Germany during the first half of the 20th century." This item was purchased from the estate of Marion Deshmukh, and the Order of Merit book was NICELY INSCRIBED BY FRITZ STERN TO MARION DESHMUKH. Marion Deshmukh taught in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University in Washington, DC, for forty-five years, and in her later years was the Robert T. Hawkes Professor Emerita of History at George Mason University. She specialized in modern German and European cultural and visual history. Her most famous work was, Max Liebermann: Modern Art and Modern Germany, published in 2017. She passed in 2019. Marion Deshmukh and Fritz Stern were obviously friends and colleagues. I have posted another item inscribed by Fritz Stern to Marion. THE LAST LISTING PHOTO SHOWS THIS INSCRIPTION BY FRITZ STERN AS A WAY OF AUTHENTICATING THE SIGNATURE IN THE BOOK OF THIS LISTING. THAT OTHER ITEM IS NOT PART OF THIS LISTING - JUST SHOWN HERE AS AN AUTHENTICATION OF THE SIGNATURE. THE BOOK IS FULLY IN GERMAN. The full title of the book of this listing is, DER ORDEN POUR LE MÉRITE FÜR WISSENSCHAFTEN UND KÜNSTE 1842-2002. This translates to, THE ORDER OF MERIT FOR SCIENCES AND ARTS 1842-2002. The book was published by the organization responsible for this medal - Der Orden Pour... in 2002, ISBN 3-88350-175-1. The book is in VERY GOOD CONDITION, with clean blue cloth boards, gilt decoration and titling front board and spine, little to no board edge and corner wear. There is a small stain on the front board, to the right of the emblem. No further marks in 237 clean and solidly bound glossy pages, mostly with brief profiles, photos, and facsimile signatures of recent honorees including Fritz Stern. A bit more background on the medal and the procedures of the organization from its website, translated from the German: "The medal made of gold shows the Prussian eagle in the middle, surrounded by the crowned initials of Frederick II, repeated eight times. His purpose is written on a blue enamelled background: Pour le mérite. In this form, which has existed since 1842, according to the statutes currently in force, a maximum of 40 in Germany and the same number abroad work "men and women who have acquired an excellent reputation through widespread recognition of their services in science and art", natural scientists, humanities scholars and artists in roughly equal numbers. Under the patronage of the head of state, they form the religious community, which meets twice a year for internal talks and negotiations and once, towards the end of May, in Berlin and in the presence of the Federal President as protector of the order, holds a large, publicly accessible meeting with honoring the dead, Performances by newly elected medal bearers, the ceremonial lecture by one of the members and concert music."
