Washington Silver Quarter - Background & Design: In preparation for the 1932 bicentennial celebration of George Washington's birth, the bicentennial committee commissioned a Washington half dollar. However, Congress decided to permanently replace the Standing Liberty quarter instead, mandating that the obverse of the new coin feature a depiction of Washington. Sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser was initially engaged to design a commemorative medal and adapt it for the quarter, but Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon ultimately chose Flanagan's design over Fraser's, a decision upheld by Mellon's successor, Ogden L. Mills. Starting on August 1, 1932, the new silver quarters entered circulation and remained in production until the Mint shifted to copper-nickel clad coinage in 1965. A special reverse design commemorating the United States Bicentennial was used in 1975 and 1976, featuring the double date 1776–1976 on all pieces, while no quarters were minted with the date 1975 alone. Since 1999, the original eagle reverse has been replaced, with the quarter showcasing various designs, including the 50 states, other jurisdictions of the nation, and notable historical and natural sites as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters series, which concluded in 2021. The bust of Washington underwent modifications, with a smaller version introduced in 1999 and the original, albeit still small, bust restored in 2010 to enhance finer details. In 2021, Flanagan's original design returned to the obverse, accompanied by a reverse design depicting Washington crossing the Delaware River in 1776. Additionally, a new commemorative series featuring influential women will commence in 2022. Washington Silver Quarter - Grading Scale & Guidelines: When evaluating the condition of a Washington Silver Quarter, an "Average Circulated" grade indicates that the coin has experienced typical wear and tear from being in circulation. Obverse: The primary design elements on the front of the coin will show signs of wear throughout, reflecting its circulation history. Some of the lettering may exhibit edge wear. Reverse: The key design elements on the back of the coin will display evidence of wear across the major elements due to circulation. The breast feathers and wreath leaves may be discernible, with minor detail visible in the wing feathers. These grading guidelines provide a framework for assessing the condition of Washington Silver Quarters, allowing collectors to understand the level of wear and preservation of these coins in circulation.
